Beaches

There are numerous popular surf beaches in the area (Ericeira, Sāo Lourenço, Praia Grande, Praia do Quincho), but if you like real privacy with friends and loved ones for a romantic picnic, a skinny dip or some serene sunbathing, there are a couple of unknown beaches and bays quite nearby. Just check with Johanna and she will give you the directions.

São Julião

surf_025.jpg

A wild beach, unsurpassed in its beauty, only 1.6 km away from Joāo Jungle, sought after by surfers and beach lovers. Amazing nature in the valley with overwhelming rock formations at the mouth of a small river complete the picture. In the old village on top of the cliffs you’ll find a typical Portuguese cafe "Gota d'Acool" for a simple breakfast or snack, with stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Praia da Vigia & Samarra

These two magnificent beaches located south of São Julião, are the gems of the Assafora area, surrounded by steep cliffs into the deep blue ocean. They are unsupervised and have no facilities. Hidden and not easy to get to, you rarely find tourists, only a few local people or traditional fishermen. They are both known as naturist beaches. Ssssst, please don’t tell anyone!

Azenhas do Mar

Azenhas do Mar is a village on the coast of Sintra, Colares, 13.4 km from Joāo Jungle; a 20 min drive. The small town developed along the Cameijo stream, which runs into the Atlantic with breathtaking views. Next to the beach, a pool carved in bare rock is filled with sea water when the tide rises (discovered in the ‘60s – flower power vibes). Underneath the Restaurante Piscinas you’ll find the relaxing cocktail bar (€ 6,-) on the beach with Serge Gainsbourg reggae music. We love it!

Our favourite (fish) restaurant Piscinas with rooftop terrace and cocktail bar

Agua & Sal Marisqueira Gelataria

Portuguese Restaurant Adega Azenhas do Mar

Praia do Quincho

Praia do Quincho.jpg

It says it all, this incredibly unique beach, which emerges from the coastal route N247 (from Joāo Jungle it is 32 km or a 40 min drive along valleys and forests) enchanting you immediately! It is considered the finest beach on the Costa de Lisboa, known to many (kite) surfers as the ultimate surfing beach of Portugal. Stunning place, amazing atmosphere, rough nature, good vibes and bar/restaurant. Breathtaking!!

Our favorite bar: Bar do Quincho

Praia da Adraga

Adraga.jpg

This amazing beautiful beach is less accessible but more peaceful. It is located amidst the cliffs but its beautiful natural sands are worth visiting. The cliffs can be excellent jumping places for those who practice paragliding.

Our favorite (fish) restaurant: Restaurant Praia da Adraga

Foz Do Lizandro

Mountainbiken 2.jpg

Picturesque wide sandy beach, in a green deep valley through which the river Lizandro flows and where you can swim or do SUP boarding at the mouth of the river ("Foz"), fish and surf the ocean, with restaurants and surfboard rentals.

Our favourite restaurants for breakfast & lunch is Bar Batana Surf&Deli (Alex & Joanna) Bar nr. 3 and for lunch and dinner Indigo Bar nr. 5

Praia Magoito

Praia Magoito.jpg

Discover the magnificent Praia do Magoito beach with its impressive cliff and overwhelming ocean views! It is just a great 20-minute bike tour (7.5 km) from Joāo Jungle and is a nice destination with a café/restaurant on the beach. A little further on you’ll find lovely Aguda beach (a must, Public Bath), accessible via a beautiful walking trail across the cliffs and beach.

Praia Grande

Praia Grande .jpg

This wide, open beach is named after the vast expanse of sand and ideal for sunbathing. In spite of the great waves for surfing and bodyboarding competitions, it is very safe for swimming. The beach is very lively and also offers a salt water swimming pool as well as many cafés and restaurants.

Our favorite restaurant: Bar do Fundo

Stunning ocean view: Bar Varanda

Carcavelos

Carcavelos 2 .jpeg

The Praia de Carcavelos is one of the finest beaches on the Lisbon coastline and because of the excellent public transport, is by far the most popular. Carcavelos beach is renowned for its reliable surf, soft golden sands and great tourist facilities, but expect it to be busy at the weekends, especially during the summer season. Very relaxing during wintertime. Wonderful sunsets, many bars & restaurants.

Praia da Ursa

Praia Ursa.jpg

Praia da Ursa is known as a nude beach and not easy to reach, but the beautiful scenery is the reward.
